5 Easy and Fun Ways to Decrease Waste Including Inspired Projects + Resources

Happy-Earth-Day-1Picture Source

Last year for Earth Day I wrote a post regarding my frustration with Earth Day festivals. The juxtaposition of these celebrations and the production of disgusting overflowing landfill waste and mess.  I don’t attend Earth Day festivals any longer due to the damage they create.  I do attend something called the Whole Earth Festival in my town that is a 100% waste free event.  This happens in May over Mother’s Day weekend.  Continue reading

Homemade Alcohol-Free Hand & Surface Sanitizer

DSC_0006

When I first became a mommy I was a total spaz about germs.  It was like a pharmacy in my obnoxiously oversized mom bag (which was filled with things that could last me through a natural disaster).  I had like 15 different hand sanitizers, sprays, gels, soaps, wipes…you name it, I had it, and it didn’t matter the cost. I bought the best organic, non-toxic products money could buy, because of course, nothing was too good for my new baby. Okay, fast forward 8 years and I am MUCH more relaxed (and knowledgeable) about germs. In fact, I welcome and encourage them.  After reading the many research articles about how we are making our bodies ‘too clean’ and thus ‘too sick’ I changed my tune. I get it, I get how being too clean can damage our microbiome and in turn damage our immune system.  So I backed off – big time.  For me, a step in this more evolved direction was being okay with my kids getting sick, because getting sick equals exposure to germs.  I used to think my job was to protect my children from germs so they wouldn’t get sick.  I remember when my daughter, Skylar (my first child), came down with a cold for the first time at 18 months…I was so sad – I felt like I failed her. How did you get germs in your mouth with all my anti-germ armor!  Now I’m like, hum, my kid’s haven’t been sick in a few months…what’s going on?  I appreciate how important it is to expose the body to germs, and how important it is to build anti-bodies.   Continue reading

Welcome to the New and Improved Tasty Alternative Blog

Hi everyone.  I’m so exited to be back.  Jeez, that was a long break.  But a very productive one at that. In case you’re wondering about that big ole’ school auction I co-chaired, well I’m happy to say it was huge success…and so much fun (but oh man it was A LOT of work)!  Let’s see…oh yes, I love my new job and that makes working on the weekends not ‘so’ bad, as going to work is actually quite enjoyable. The kids are great, Scott is great.  My health is doing pretty well these days too (yay). Before I keep rambling on here, I should direct you to a few links, especially if you’re new to The Tasty Alternative. You can read all about me here.  And if you’re wondering what this blog is all about, you can read more about The Tasty Alternative  here.   Continue reading

I love You Cinnamon Apple Muffins

I-Love-You-Cinnamon-Apple-Muffins-Single-The-Tasty-Alternative

I call these “I Love You Cinnamon Apple Muffins” because I make them especially for my children (Daddy gets a few too of course).  My kids LOVE these muffins—and they love to make them with me (it’s just a big ole’ love-fest).  I’ve included a few pictures of my son, Ethan, helping me one morning before preschool.  These muffins are moist, yet fluffy and have such a nice cinnamon apple flavor.  They make excellent snacks or can be part of a healthy breakfast.  I hope your family enjoys these muffins as much as we do.  Join me over at Gluten Free Easily for my gluten free Cinnamon Apple Muffin Recipe (gluten free, dairy free, cane-sugar free, nut free). I shared these muffins last month on March Muffin Madness over at my friend Shirley’s Blog, Gluten Free Easily.  You can check out the guest post here.

Fighting The Colds. Cherry-Hemp Morning Smoothie, and Other Foods We Eat to Heal

We’ve all been feeling pretty blah.  Viruses and colds have been making their way around school and homes, certainly to be expected this time of year.  And allergy season is just a few weeks away as it warms up here in Northern California.  Lets be real.  I hate it when my kids get sick, I hate being sick, but I’m not opposed to my children getting sick…because I seriosuly used to be.  I’ve really, REALLY backed off the hand sanitizer over the last year.  I was getting a wee bit obsessed with their hands ALWAYS being clean.  And I’ve made the decision to chill out.  There’s a time when it’s more reasonable to be more obssesed about the germs, for example, if your family has a big even or trip coming up and enilating all possible germs is actually

2 cups filtered water
2 cups frozen cherries
1/4 cup hemp
1 banana
2 T lucima powder

Raw Foods Thursdays Guest Host: Thursday July 25, 2013

Hello and welcome to Raw Foods Thursdays! My lovely friend Heather from Gluten Free Cat just moved to NYC!  So exciting!! While she settles in her new environment, a few of her blogger friends (myself and three others) are hosting Raw Foods Thursdays for the month of July.  I am the final guest host. Last week our pal Tessa from Tessa the Domestic Diva hosted and you can check out the wonderful submissions HERE.
What do you have to share this week?
Here’s how you can participate:
  • 1.  Simply link up a raw foods recipe (see What is Raw Food?), mention Raw Foods Thursdays, and link back to this post so your readers can join in the fun!
  • 2.  Please link to the recipe, not to a blog’s home page, so we can all find your raw foods recipe.
  • 3.  You may link up a recipe that you’ve made in the past. Just make sure to share something different each time you participate.
  • 4.  Be sure to leave a comment letting us know who you are and what you’re sharing.
  • 5.  Feel free to use the Raw Foods Thursdays blog badge created by the lovely, talented Heather Peters!
 What are Raw Foods Meals?
  • *Plant-based meals that are not cooked.  Dehydrators may be used.  (The raw foods community has differing views on temperature, but the range is between 104 and 118 degrees.) Feel free to link up recipes that use a slightly higher temperature as long as they could be made at 118 with a longer dry time.
  • *Raw Ingredients: vegetables, fruit, dried fruit, nuts, seeds, gluten-free sprouted grains, beans, and oils.
What isn’t raw?
  • *Anything cooked or heated above 118.
  • *Anything processed.  If it comes from a can or a package that lists more than one ingredient, chances are it’s not raw!
  • *If your recipe contains an ingredient like maple syrup that makes your submission “almost raw”, please share it anyway. Raw sweeteners are easy to substitute.
~~My picks from last week~~

Chocolate Cherry Milkshake
from: Gluten Free Easily

Pineapple Mango Creamsicles and Mixed Berry Ice Pops
From: One Small Vegan

Iced Blueberry Coconut Smoothie
From: Candida Diet Plan
