Win a Copy of Ricki Heller’s New CookBook: Naturally Sweet and Gluten Free + Review

I’m thrilled to finally share this review and giveaway with you today.  I jumped at the chance to be part of Ricki’s virtual book tour, as I am such a HUGE fan of Ricki and her amazing blog:  You’ve no doubt seen Ricki’s new cookbook: Naturally Sweet and Gluten Free circulating the web and featured on many, many blogs.

This is a cookbook you NEED in your culinary library.

Let me ask you this

Do you have a sweet tooth?
Do you enjoy desserts?
Are you trying to get white/refined cane sugar out of your life?
Do you suffer from Candida?
Do you often have intense sugar cravings?
Want to learn how to bake using natural, healthy ingredients?
Want to make healthy snacks for your children?

If you answered yes to even one of these questions, then this book is for you.

What makes Naturally Sweet and Gluten Free different?
This is a book devoted entirely to desserts, breads, and treats.
All of Ricki’s recipes are vegan and 100% free of: gluten, dairy, and cane-sugar.

Naturally Sweet and Gluten Free is a wonderful reference.  Ricki shares her personal story and relationship with sugar from childhood to present day.  She shares her low points and triumphs and her transition to permanent whole-food living without animal products and cane-sugar.  Ricki states, “Today I enjoy a whole-food diet filled with delicious foods and no absence of treats.”
If Ricki can do it, so can you! Let Ricki be your guide into a healthier lifestyle, let her show you how to have a positive relationship with the foods so often placed “off limits.”  Don’t deprive yourself, celebrate food and celebrate health with Naturally Sweet and Gluten Free!

When reviewing a cookbook, I prefer to test several recipes and provide feedback for my readers, so continue reading for my recipe reviews.  And at the end of this post you can enter to win your very own copy of Naturally Sweet and Gluten Free.

Recipe Review
For the first recipe I could not wait to make her “Sugar-Free Sugar Cookies” (page 116).  I haven’t had sugar cookies in years, er, I haven’t had sugar cookies that tasted this AMAZING in years.  I cannot stress how close to traditional sugar cookies these taste in texture and flavor. The dough was easy to work with (I left it in the fridge over night), it rolled out perfectly the next day, the dough kept its shape, the cookies were light and flaky and BUTTERY (yes these vegan cookies tasted buttery), and they were the perfect sweetness level. I frosted these bad boys with Ricki’s world famous Chocolate “Buttercream” Frosting (and I went crazy and ate like 10 cookies in one day).  I would buy this cookbook for the sugar cookie recipe alone my friends, it’s that good.  I had such fun with my kids cutting out the shapes (pumpkins for Halloween of course) and frosting was a blast.  Oh oh oh, this frosting.  No words.  Just make it and you’ll see.  I used tahini and was pleasantly surprised by how much I LOVED it in there (admittedly, I was skeptical at first) but Ricki knows her stuff and she is right on the money with her subs and suggestions).

Next I made Raw Gingersnap Cookie Bon Bons (page 206).  Filled with nuts, oats, cinnamon and ginger, these little bite size treats are fabulous.  The coconut butter coating is sensational.  My family really enjoyed these.  For me the ginger was extra special.  It’s one of my favorite ingredients and flavors.

For a dinner party with friends I made Raw Frosted Lemon-Poppy Seed Squares (page 208).  Let me just say thisa 7 year old boy at the gathering devoured these.  His mom leaned over and said, “He’s super pickyI cannot believe he is eating so many of those.”  Nuff said!

And finally, homemade Oatmeal Poppy Seed Scones (page 54).  This was my first time making scones! Yes. You know I’m not a very adventurous baker so I appreciate Ricki’s easy-to-follow recipes.  I made a large batch of Ricki’s All-Purpose Gluten Free Flour Mix (page 22) which is awesome. This cookbook appeals to both the novice and seasoned baker.  The scones were a hit with the family.  I had to put a 2 1/2 scone limit on my 4-year-old son that night.  The poppy seed flavor was subtle and pleasing.

Diva Stuff Beauty Bundle Giveaway – $40 value (all natural skin care products)

This Giveaway Is Now Closed As of
August 9, 2013.

Last month Vanessa, a representative from Diva Stuff, contacted me and asked if I would be interested in trying their all natural beauty and skin care products.  I was hesitant at first, because as you know, I make my own lotions, face cream, body spray, etc.  But I always try and keep an open mind when companies contact me – I’m very exclusive here on The Tasty Alternativeonly the best, most natural, non-toxic and (if possible) environmentally friendly products.  So I did some searching around on the Diva Stuff website with my trusted Skin Deep Cosmetic Database Resource and checked through quite a few products and the ingredients.  Everything looked all natural with ingredients I recognized.  But you will have to contact the company for the entire list of ingredients.  For some reason, they are not all listed on each product.  I know many of you out there suffer from severe food allergies, so please, PLEASE, make sure you know exactly what you are putting on your skin and email the company to verify the ingredients if need be.

Before we jump into the giveaway, I want to share two product reviews with you.  Here’s my honest opinion about these products.

Black Charcoal, black Walnut Hull And Vodka Detox
& Acne Soap Bar, for Face & Body 6oz

I don’t have a huge issue with face or body acne (just your typical monthly acne),  but I love charcoal (I take it internally for bloating) and so I was totally intrigued by this soap.  I can honestly say, after using this soap for about a week, that it did help clear up the small clogged pours on my chest, shoulder, and back.  Just a few things to consider: (1) it’s black (obviously) so it will transfer onto your shower and make a bit of a mess if you don’t have a nice spot for bar soap, and (2) it has a fairly strong scent.  I asked for the full ingredient list to make sure there wasn’t anything synthetic or unnatural in there.  It all checked out, but just be mindful of the scent factor.  It’ not totally overwhelming, but I have pretty severe chemical sensitivity, so everything smells strong to me.
(here is the full list of ingredients: soap–glycerin soap, vodka, charcoal powder, black walnut powder, natural fragrance face wash– distilled water, charcoal, sulfur, tea tree oil, lime oil, vitamin b3, xantham gum )

 Premium Acne Face Wash With
Charcoal, sulfur And B3, 6oz

I’m a total snob when it comes to facial cleansers.  I mean really, I have very high standards.  It has to be completely all natural, not overly drying, and it must effortlessly remove all my eye make-up without stinging my eyes.  I was happy to find that this charcoal face wash removed all my eye make up and did not sting a bit.  It is a little drying in my skin, but understandable giving this is a acne face wash, but nothing too extreme.  My husband likes this product as well.

Cookbook Review AND Giveaway – Giveaway Now Closed.

This giveaway is now closed.
Thank you.

I’m absolutely thrilled to share this review and cookbook with you today!  AND offer you your very own copy along with two extra goodies (see below on how to enter the giveaway)

May I introduce you to the wonderful cookbook: Culinary Creativity by Dawn Allen (who authors the blog Cuter Than Gluten).  Let me tell you what this cookbook is all about here right off the bat and what you’ll find.  All 110 recipes found in this cookbook are gluten free, dairy free, cane-sugar free, soy free, baker’s yeast free, and nightshade free (and 105 of the recipes can be corn free).  Oh yes, that’s right.  Dawn has created an amazing cookbook for those of us who eat an alternative diet AND for those of us who love amazing food.  I don’t know if there is another cookbook out there like this?  Let me tell you, I’m so glad Dawn came along and created one.

Okay, let’s get started.  Below you’ll find the many recipes I’ve made from this cookbook.  I didn’t plan on making so many, but they all looked so delicious, easy and with very few ingredients.  I’ve already adopted many of her recipes into my weekly dinner, lunch, and snack rotation.  Her cookbook also includes a bunch of delectable desserts, but I am always desperate for lunch and dinner ideas. So I focused on these recipes.

First, here are just a few reasons why I love this cookbook:

1.  Every single page is in COLOR
(I just love that).

2.  Each recipe comes with a picture (also love that).

3. Every recipe has full nutritional content (listed in the back in Appendix II) – so you know the calories, fat, fiber, sugar, etc., of each recipe (that’s pretty awesome).

4.  Each recipe comes with notes or fun stories about Dawn’s travels and culinary inspirations.

5.  The recipes are easy to make and the instructions are easy to follow and every page is nicely organized.  It’s compact and easy to handle.

6.  BENTO LUNCHES!!  Dawn dedicated 29 full pages to Bento lunches with 32 incredibly inspiring ideas (from leftovers)!

Okay on to the recipes

The first recipe I made was a red sauce.  It’s Dawn’s version of a pasta sauce (made with beets).  I’ll admit, I was skeptical of this recipe as I’m such a huge tomato sauce lover.  But let me tell you, it’s amazing.  I was astounded by the flavor.  And my kids LOVED it too.  They both asked for seconds of the “pink pasta.”  Even my husband was surprised by how much it tasted like a tomato based sauce.  There is just a slight hit of beet.  This recipe was huge for me, as I’ve come to realize nightshades really irritate my digestion and contribute to inflammation.  I’ve been feeling great since following Dawn’s nightshade free recipes

Red Sauce (page 118)
vegan, gluten free, dairy free

This dinner knocked my socks off.  Pictured are three separate recipes I made for dinner one night.  Dal, rice and seeds with tahini dressing, and balsamic chicken.  The dal is my FAVORITE recipe.  I’ve made it several times.  Dawn has generously allowed me to share one of her recipes with you, and I chose this one (see end of post).  It’s a great example of her recipes: easy, few ingredients, and full of flavor.  The rice and seeds are also a family favorite.

Dal (page 93)
Rice and Seeds (page 103)
Balsamic Chicken (page 82)

Here I’ve made another three separate recipes into one dinner.  The baked beans are flavorful and hearty, the cabbage is sweet and tart, and the pesto chicken burger is moist and the pesto is balanced perfectly.  I think the pesto burger is just so smart.  These three recipes and the above recipes are in my weekly dinner rotation.

Stovetop “Baked” Beans (page 96)
Sweet and Sour Red Cabbage (page 98)
Pesto Chicken Burger (page 87)

I made this soup for lunch one weekend and my kids LOVED it.  It’s a delicious creamy black bean soup just bursting with flavor.  Another family favorite right here.

Black Bean Soup (page 42)
Another winner lunch!
Two of Dawn’s recipes are featured here: fast fusilli and ginger roasted beets served with steamed peas.  The pasta recipe calls for umeboshi vinegar which I have used before but didn’t have any on hand.  So I added 1/2 teaspoon of ACV, extra oil, and some garlic/onion granules.  Really great flavor (and, this recipe only has ingredients – talk about fast, easy pasta).  And the beets, oh the beets, so delicious.  We are huge beet lovers, especially my son and everyone just loved this recipe.  What a successful and healthy lunch.

Fast Fusilli (page 48)
Ginger Roasted Beets (page 92)
My husband is currently learning how to cook and so for dinner one night he made one of Dawn’s recipes: Sesame chicken with broccoli.  It. Is. Amazing.  Seriously, Scott felt very confident while making the recipe and commented that the instructions were easy to follow.  I think he was shocked at how great it tasted (like, did I just make this crazy good dinner).  I was very proud of him.

Sesame Chicken with Broccoli (page 86)

And finally, some fun snacks.  I was very interested in the almond “cheese” recipe from the getgo.  It was very easy to make.  It has a slightly spongy texture (at least mine did, and I think this is from the agar agar).  It has a nice smokey flavor and is just delightful on the crackers (that I made with 3 times more garlic that the recipe called for).  The crackers have 7 ingredients and you can add so many different herbs and flavors.  They are made with a garbanzo/fava bean flour.  My son really enjoyed these with the “cheese.”

Crackers (page 168)
Almond Cheese (page 115)

I’ve made several other recipes from the cookbook, including breakfast recipes and a few desserts.  Everything has turned out delicious.  And so many more are bookmarked.
The Giveaway

I am giving away 1 copy of Dawn’s awesome cookbook.  And as a thank you to Dawn for sending me my own copy to review, I am throwing in 2 other goodies with the giveaway: 1 bag of organic raw cacao powder and 1 box of Ancient Harvest quinoa flakes.  These are two ingredients you will see often in her recipes.

Dal (page 93)

(1 hour 30 minutes) 4 cups
-1 1/2 cups dried yellow split peas
-3 1/2 cups water
-1 1/2 teaspoons turmeric (divided)
-3/4 teaspoon salt
-2 tablespoons oil

-1/2 cup coconut milk

How To:
1.  In a large pot, combine the peas, water, 1 teaspoon turmeric, and salt.  Cover and cook on low for 90 minutes until the peas are tender.

2.  Meanwhile, heat the oil in a large skillet on med/low and saute the onions until translucent (about 15 minutes).  Add the garlic, 1/2 teaspoon turmeric, cumin, and ground pepper.  Stir for a few minutes.  Add in the coconut milk to deglaze the pan.

3.  When the peas are done, add the onion mixture to the peas.  The dal should be the texture of thick chilli.  It will thicken as it cools (quite a bit).

Giveaway: 2 Bottles of NuNaturals Stevia (Orange and Lemon Flavor – $30 value). Four winners!!

This Contest is now closed (8/19/12)

Back in March Ron from NuNaturals contacted me and asked if I wanted to try a few samples of their products.  I was hesitant at first.  You see, my only experience with stevia up until that point was a four year old bottle of generic stevia in my cupboard that had an unpleasant bitter after taste.  I made the mistake of using it in a few recipes – not good.  So I used it solely to sweeten my children’s herbal tea when they were ill (and I only used like a drop).  Ron informed me that NuNaturals was differentno bitter aftertaste he said.  Well, I was sold on that alone.  I’m happy to report that I’ve been extremely pleased with all the NuNatural liquid products.  I use them frequently, most notably in sweet recipes where NuNaturals shines with a variety of awesome flavors.  Some of my favorites include vanila, cocoa, and lemon.  Using NuNaturals allows me to use less sweetener in recipes (and that’s always a good thing).*  Here are just some of the ways I use NuNatrual liquid stevia:

1. My children’s oatmeal
2. Tart smoothies
3. Homemade chocolate
4. Homemade ice creams
5. Herbal teas
6. Iced teas
7. Salad dressings

*Please note that stevia is not used or recommended on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD).

Ron has generously offered four of my readers two bottles of liquid stevia (lemon and orange flavor) – a $30.00 value.  How awesome is that!  Entering is easy, see below.
